SUMMARY:Quantum for Educators (Virtual Sessions) - Registration
DESCRIPTION:Saskatchewan Educators are invited to register for Quantum for Educators hosted online by the IQC!\n[I personally (Logan Petlak) participated in one of their Quantum workshops several years ago and it was amazing; plenty of resources and lessons to instantly use in my secondary science classrooms!] \n\nDate: November 18-21\, 2024\nLocation: Online!\nHosted by: Institute for Quantum Computing\, University of Waterloo\, Ontario\n\nWith 2025 announced at the International Year of Quantum Science & Technology\, there’s never been a better time to bring quantum science to our students. To help prepare educators no matter where they’re located\, we’re excited to host a series of virtual sessions on how to connect quantum technology to the curriculum\, hosted by the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo.\n\nThese sessions will take content from our long-running Quantum for Educators (QEd) workshop to explore fundamental quantum principles like superposition and entanglement\, connect them to curriculum-relevant topics like waves\, polarization\, vectors\, and probability\, and show how they are applied in modern and emerging technologies like quantum computing and communication. We’ll also overview affordable hands-on activities that can be done with your classroom.\n\nWe will be hosting four sessions in November\, including:\n\n\nQubits\, Superposition\, and Measurement\, where we explore how quantum superposition and measurement uncertainty can be understood by examining the polarization of light and applied to cryptography.\n\nWave-Particle Duality and Quantum Interference\, in which we’ll examine an experiment where wave and particle behaviour can be seen in the same system and put forward a student-friendly thought experiment that highlights the peculiarities of quantum behaviour.\nUncertainty\, Probability\, and Quantum Computing\, where we’ll dive into the uncertainty principle and quantum probabilities\, first by exploring hands-on student activities and then by comparing quantum and classical logic. Finally\, we’ll explore a simple quantum algorithm demonstrating the difference between traditional and quantum computers.\nEntanglement and the Quantum Zoo\, where we’ll demystify the nature of entanglement\, including exploring the impact of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics winners. Finally\, we’ll explore the quantum zoo\, showcasing the numerous systems where these ideas appear and the tools needed to advance quantum technology in modern labs.\n\nRegister by Friday November 3rd to secure your spot! All attendees will have access to live sessions\, recordings\, slides\, and other lesson materials. There is no cost to attend.\n\nFind out more and register here – https://uwaterloo.ca/institute-for-quantum-computing/outreach-and-workshops/quantum-educators/2024-virtual-sessions .\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact iqc-outreach@uwaterloo.ca .

SUMMARY:Canadian Chemistry Contest & Olympiad (CCC and CCO)
DESCRIPTION:Do you have four passionate Chemistry students interested in competing nationally (and internationally)? The Canada Chemistry Olympiad (CCO – https://cco-occ.ca/) invites your students to participate! This might be a great way to do the Student-Directed Study Outcome for Chemistry 30! \nRegister here! https://www.cheminst.ca/discover/canadian-chemistry-contest/\nSpecific Registration Link Here\nThe Canada Chemistry Olympiad (CCO) is a FREE training program for Canadian high school students with an interest in advanced high school level Chemistry. If you are a Canadian Student at a Canadian High School who is passionate about Chemistry\, you are a candidate for this program. \nStudents wishing to be considered for the four-person national team that will attend the International Chemistry Olympiad must fulfill ALL of the following criteria: \n\nComplete all the on-line problem sets (October – March)\n\nThese are provided monthly by a PhD student and begins in October 2024! Training for this consists of remote tutorial sessions hosted by a PhD student with monthly problem sets that students must complete. \n\n\nComplete the take-home examination (available March 1st)* * – Previous years included this.\nWrite Parts A & B & C of the Canadian Chemistry Contest – CCC (Wednesday\, April 23rd\, 2025)\nAttend the National Camp and complete the final selection exam (May/June)\nParticipate in the National Team Training (June/July)\n\nThe commitment for teachers is to register the students as they will be the main point of contact between us and the students (although students are more than welcome to message us directly if they have questions). The teacher must also be willing to proctor the student in-person to ensure fairness in writing the exam (up to 5 hours; one time commitment). \nTo be selected for the National Camp students must complete all problem sets\, the Take home exam and the CCO exam and be among the top 10% on the aggregate score on the three (with the Problem sets worth 5%\, the Take home exam worth 15% and the CCO worth 80% of the score). Students who do not complete the take home will not be eligible for the National Camp or IChO. Invitations to the National Camp will be sent to students within the top ~10% of students based on the above criteria! \nReminder to register for this here: https://www.cheminst.ca/discover/canadian-chemistry-contest/ \nWebsite is available here: https://cco-occ.ca/
